ARANEA
Overhead Slab Loading and Unloading Robot
ARANEA is an overhead rail-mounted robot designed for the automatic loading, unloading and transfer of natural-stone slabs.
Description & Technical Details
ARANEA is an overhead rail-mounted robot designed for the automatic loading, unloading and transfer of natural-stone slabs. It can be configured for resin-treatment lines or polishing lines and is available in marble and granite versions according to the required slab dimensions, weight and handling conditions.
The robot provides movement along three principal axes: horizontal travel along the overhead rails, vertical lifting and lowering of the slab, and rotation of the vacuum lifting frame. Its rigid bridge structure enables the controlled handling of heavy slabs, including material up to 50 mm thick. The bridge travels along overhead rails on driven wheels connected to an electric motor through a shaft-and-coupling transmission. The vacuum pump and lifting equipment are installed directly on the travelling bridge, while the vacuum lifting frame is raised and lowered by an electric geared motor.
In the standard configuration, the robot is equipped with 63 vacuum suction cups manufactured from durable Japanese-origin NBR rubber. The cups are mounted on shock-absorbing supports to compensate for surface irregularities and reduce impact during slab engagement.
The vacuum system is divided into five independently controlled groups. Through the touchscreen stone-mapping interface, the operator can activate or deactivate the required vacuum groups according to the dimensions and position of the slab. This enables the robot to apply vacuum only within the effective stone area.
A high-capacity Italian-origin vacuum pump provides a nominal airflow of 160 m³/h. The vacuum lifting frame is rotated through a combined worm and planetary gearbox arrangement, designed to minimise mechanical play and provide controlled slab positioning.
ARANEA is controlled through a PLC-based automation system incorporating variable-frequency drives, encoders, sensors and a touchscreen operator interface. The standard rail length is 9 metres and can be adapted according to the production-line layout.
Resin-Line Configuration
Designed for loading, unloading and transferring slabs between resin-application stations, drying or curing ovens, buffer stations and other equipment within an automated resin-treatment line.
Polishing-Line Configuration
Designed for loading and unloading slabs at the entry and exit of polishing lines. The structure, travel arrangement and positioning sequence are adapted to the polishing-machine layout and slab-flow direction.
Marble Configuration
Configured for the dimensions, weights and surface characteristics commonly encountered in marble-processing applications. The vacuum-frame dimensions and suction-cup arrangement are selected accordingly.
Granite Configuration
Configured for larger and heavier granite slabs. Depending on the selected model, the granite version may incorporate a larger vacuum frame and an increased number of suction cups.
The robot can also be supplied in right-hand or left-hand installation layouts according to the direction of the production line.
ARANEA Speedy
The Speedy version is developed for production lines requiring shorter slab-transfer times and higher throughput. Its movement and control systems are configured for faster horizontal travel, lifting and positioning while maintaining controlled acceleration and accurate slab placement.
ARANEA Smart
The Smart version is designed to improve vacuum reliability when handling slabs containing holes, cracks, cavities or other surface discontinuities. Each suction cup is monitored through an individual sensor-controlled vacuum module. When a cup experiences continuous air leakage because it is positioned over an opening or defective area, the system automatically closes the corresponding valve and isolates that suction cup from the remaining vacuum circuit. This prevents a single leaking cup from continuously drawing air from the system and helps preserve the vacuum level available to the cups that are properly engaged with the slab. The function reduces the need for manual cup deactivation and operator intervention when slab surface conditions vary.
Extended Rail System
The standard 9-metre rail system can be extended or adapted according to the distance between the loading, unloading and processing stations.
Custom Vacuum-Frame Configuration
The number, position and grouping of the suction cups can be adapted according to slab dimensions, material type and the requirements of the selected production line.
